Cloud, FinOps and AI: What You Need to Know About Unit Economics, GPUs and the ROI Flywheel

AI has pushed cloud into overdrive. In this episode of the AI Proving Ground Podcast, two of our top cloud experts — Jack French and Todd Barron — reset the approach and detail why cloud is the launchpad but portability is the strategy; how to start greenfield with containers and abstraction; what a real FinOps model for AI looks like (unit economics, tagging, token/GPU visibility); where neo clouds fit versus hyperscalers; and how to handle cross-cloud risk and skill gaps; and the governance moves that accelerate—not restrict—innovation.

How to Pick the Right LLM

Welcome to the How to Pick the Right LLM Learning Path! Designed for engineers and technical practitioners, this course moves beyond benchmark-driven defaults to build a repeatable approach to model selection, rooted in a core truth: there is no single best model, only the right model for a specific task. You will first master a framework built around six key selection factors: use case, performance, latency, cost at scale, deployment, and security. From there, the path dives into the distinct LLM call types that power agentic systems—including classification, planning, and tool dispatch—and explores how architectural properties like reasoning mode and structured-output compliance dictate fit. Finally, you will jump into a hands-on JupyterLab environment to benchmark models across four capability tiers on canonical agent tasks. By measuring real-world latency and token consumption, you will build a data-driven scorecard to confidently design optimized, multi-tier model architectures.

Vector DBs and Semantic Search

This hands-on lab covers the mechanics of vector search across four notebooks, each focused on a different factor that affects retrieval quality. The early notebooks examine how embedding models handle difficult language—negation, sarcasm, idioms, and domain jargon—and how the choice of distance metric and embedding model can change what a vector store returns for the same query. The final notebook introduces a repeatable framework for evaluating how chunking configurations affect retrieval accuracy, which can be adapted to your own data and pipelines. No prior vector search experience is required, and all experiments run locally using open-source models and FAISS.
